Plastic-Free Skincare That Works: Sudstone’s Eco-Conscious Mission
Wyatt OtaShare
When it comes to creating, manufacturing, and packaging a product, it's often easier and more convenient for companies to use plastic. In fact, according to UNEP.org, “Plastics make up a significant portion of marine litter, with estimates suggesting that more than eleven million metric tons of plastic enter the oceans every year.” Plastic waste ranges from microplastics to large debris, which suggests that plastic soap bottles, wrappers, loofahs, and other plastic bathroom goods could be polluting our oceans and waterways. Who wants plastic in the ocean? While corporations should take the lead in mitigating the use of plastic for the greater good, it is up to us as consumers to choose products that align with a sustainability mindset. By supporting eco-friendly businesses, our transition to earth-first actions that are better for us, and the world around us, add up. Rather than continuing to purchase plastic bottles, products wrapped in plastic packaging, our shopping habits transform a contribution to marine litter, to a contribution to sustainability.
Sudstone’s eco friendly and recyclable contribution
Sudstone knows what your skin craves and, in turn, has not only created high-quality skincare that supports local farms and businesses across Hawai’i, but also focuses on plastic-free, recyclable packaging—ensuring an eco-friendly product that looks as incredible as it performs.
Instead of discarding shavings and excess soap scraps from our soap making process, we collect and save them. With the arrival of “The Mixed Plate,” we bring you a little bit of everything—wrapped in a reusable sisal bag. This reusable bag is made from a natural, renewable plant source and offers effective yet gentle exfoliation that treats your skin and helps your soaps last longer without wasting excess soap. It hangs in your shower, so it dries easily. Rather than lathering yourself in liquid soap from a plastic bottle, or a plastic loofah, you can use plant rich nutrients that nourish your skin and mitigate the toxins that enter your body and the earth. Conventional loofahs are made out of nylon and polyethylene and can end up shedding tiny plastic fibers. These tiny fibers can sometimes be too small to be filtered out through water treatment plants and can end up into waterways, ultimately harming marine life and even making a full circle to impact human health through accidental ingestion or even passed down through the food chain. We want to do as much as we can to reduce our contribution of microplastics to prevent further environmental impacts and health hazards.
“I deserve to feel beautiful in my skin.” Yes, you do. You also shouldn’t have to worry about harsh chemicals or ingredients that harm the planet in your skincare products. Our commitment to sustainability means using non-toxic compounds that your skin will love—so you can feel good about your glow and your impact on the environment.
